good eats

S & N with fancy, boozy snowcones
Last weekend, my friends, AK1, AK2, and N came to visit me with a very specific agenda.  "We just want to eat and drink". Amazing, I'm bringing my A game.

48 hours and 15+ bars, restaurants, and lounges later, my waist expanded about 2 inches.

I didn't realize this was humanly possible.

I also had never been so dehydrated in my life.

Liquid Nitrogen Caipirinha
Animal
Dishes of tasty, weird animal parts were beautifully plated at this much buzzed about restaurant in the Fairfax district.  If I were to ever give into eating pork, this would have been the place.  The menu is constantly changing; if it's available, I highly recommend hamachi tostada and would steer you away from anything vegetarian.

Swill Automatic
This little wine bar is hidden in the industrial part of downtown.  You have the option for small 2 oz tastings or selecting from the somewhat eclectic wine list.  Also, skip the sterile inside, and go out the back doors to the dreamy seating surrounded by flowers and lights.

Pizzeria Mozza
Pizzeria Mozza
It was a bit of a miss this visit, but that was more our fault with the poor selections of overly salty pizza and other unmemorable bites.  However, it was my first time to try bone marrow, which was ah-mazing.  Why don't they call this "extra delicious and super rich butter"?

It's exciting to find a non-douche-y bar on Sunset.  Hidden away off the street, there's a magical little patio with somewhat pricey drinks but great ambiance.  This romantical date place is on my repeat visit list (hopefully when I'm on a romantical date?).

Doughboys
Hands down, the best red velvet cake I've ever tasted.  However, inhaling an entire cake in less than fifteen minutes is maybe a little disgusting.  That didn't prevent me from buying a second one to take home, though.

The Bazaar
Orochon Ramen
I'm not a huge fan of Japanese food, but I did enjoy the vegetarian ramen bowl.  Mostly because it was a vegetarian option that didn't include hidden porkiness.  Extra awesome-- AK2 finished the Man vs Food Challenge Orochon Ramen Special #2 in less than 27 minutes!  Nauseating or impressive?

Corkbar
+1 for places that think it's socially acceptable to be drinking at 3pm on a Sunday.  Wine list looked great and the small plates looked even better.  I'll have to plan a return visit since we were a bit short on time.

The Bazaar

Messo
I agree with my sister that Ethiopian food is poor man's Indian food-- the bread isn't as good, the spices aren't quite flavourful enough.  But the vegetarian and meat platters we ordered were quite tasty and we managed to pick apart the giant platters set before us.

The Bazaar
As evidenced by the bar tab, this place has the most phenomenal drinks I've ever had in my life.  Salted foam on margaritas?  Liquid nitrogen tableside drinks which are like grown-up snowcones?  The dinner was fun but not mind-blowing and I suggest skipping dessert.

AK1 & AK2 in serious menu selection mode
Also:  AOC , Little Next Door, Joan's on 3rd, 3Twenty West, and more...

All in all, a deliciously awesome weekend visit that I had to omit from my calorie counter so Nutritionist doesn't judge at my next appointment.
