it's like i'm still 14

Going out nearly every night was catching up with me, the constant lack of sleep and lingering feeling of exhaustion.  With the cooler nights of early fall settling in, the idea of curling up under the blankets and reading a good book seemed appealing.

So this past week, instead of staying up all night to socialize, I stayed up all night  to read.

Per B's recommendation, I picked up the first book of "The Hunger Games" and somehow flew through the trilogy in less than  a week.  (This happens when said book is several years below your reading level.)  A few weeks ago, I had teased one of the guys at work for reading it, calling the series "this year's Twilight.  I bet all the 14 year old girls love it!".  Both are written for the same demographic, yes, but the difference is that THG is actually good.

THG revolves around a a dystopian futuristic world with some pretty heavy themes of power, sacrifice, and society.  Imagine Gladiator meet 1984 meet Survivor.

So why are all these teenage year old girls into it?  The Love Triangle.  I mean, come on, let's not lie, it's what got me hooked.  The bad boy versus the boy-next-door, both of whom are way more appealing than a certain sparkly vampire or angry werewolf.

Four out of five stars for the first book, three and half stars for the trilogy.  In all, a pretty solid series.  Obviously, some missteps in pacing (the last book, especially) and it's best to ignore some of the weird sci-fi descriptions of their hypercolor world.  But overall, I thought the premise was intriguing and would highly recommend the first in the series.

Now if I only I could convince book club we should open up our selections to Young Adult Fiction...
