popcorn and chardonnay

Throughout the entire summer, Los Angeles has beautiful weather and a constant stream of touring artists. I figured it was time to take advantage of one of the end-of-summer shows, so I bought tickets to check out The Decemberists at the Greek Theater.

Nestled away in the middle of Griffth Park, every seat in the intimate, open theater has a great view of the stage.  The moon was fat and swollen, resting above the silhouette of the line of trees.  I even saw stars up above!  Granted, it was only maybe 6 or 7 (and one of those may or may not have been a plane), but that's exponentially more than a typical hazy LA night.

The Decemberists put on a fantastic live show, good mix of the latest album and some of the older album favourites.  The set list covered a quite a range, from the fun and whimsical to more mellow and introspective.  During the first encore, "The Mariner's Revenge",  the band members collapsed onstage, pretending they were being eaten by a whale.  My favourite song of the night was "January Hymm"; the acoustics were so clear, the haunting notes from the violin carried through and disappeared into the night.

"what were the words i meant to say before you left? /
when i could see your breath lead / where you were going to /
maybe i should just let it be / and maybe it will all come back to me" - "January Hymm"
